If there's content you'd like us to cover in future guides, leave a comment on our YouTube channel, and we'll create a video or blog post just for you!
Traditional Methods: DVDs and Blu-rays
Of course, there's the traditional way where if you have a DVD or a Blu-ray, or you go out and buy a DVD or a Blu-ray and you do have to have the Blu-ray player or a DVD player, then connected to your computer you can watch it that way. We have a lot of the can watch it that way. We have a lot of the videos and movies that way, and you just have to buy the months and you own them.
But there are new ways, and we'll go over that in just a minute. There are new ways that you can actually purchase the movies without actually owning a DVD or needing a DVD player.
Over-the-Air Broadcasting with Digital Antennas
You can also get a digital antenna, and with the digital antenna, you can capture what is being broadcast over the air. So you have Fox, you have CBS, you have ABC, you have NBC. There's other channels that are out there, and really with every channel, you get multiple channels. You don't just get one channel. There's about channels that are out there, and really with every channel you get multiple channels. You don't just get one channel. There's about five different channels. Some of them in Spanish, some of them for kids, some of them have oldies. Each of these channels, each of these stations actually has multiple channels.
Now, with doing it this way, you would have to watch the movie when it's being aired or get a digital video recorder and actually connect that to your system and program it to actually download and record the movie when it comes on, and then you can watch it at your convenience.
Streaming Devices: Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, and More
Now what do you think I'm going to do? I'm going to switch over to a Roku device because you can actually watch a lot of movies on Roku as well. And if you're TV, a lot of TVs, some TVs have Roku on them. If your TV has Roku on it, then you don't need to actually buy a Roku, but if your TV doesn't have Roku, you can actually buy a Roku device.
They're also in addition to Roku. There are other streaming platforms out there:
- Amazon Fire TV or Fire Stick
- Google TV
- Apple TV
These are all ways that you can actually watch TV. But I'm going to show you a Roku.
Finding Christmas Movies on Roku
So if we go over here to Roku, one of the things we can do, you see first of all, there are various, various links here, and if we click on this, then it shows that there are various ways that we can watch. Like here's Dr. Seuss's The Grinch Stole Christmas. So if we click on this, we see that we can watch this with Peacock. We can sign in or subscribe also, Fubo, Prime Video. So if you have an Amazon Prime subscription, that's another way you can watch this.
There are four additional ways that you can watch this. So again Peacock, sign in or subscribe, Amazon, send your subscribe, a Fubo, also a Sling. You can actually purchase it from Apple TV for $3.99. From Fandango, you can purchase it for $3.99.
Now, if you do purchase it, it's a digital copy and you would actually be able. Well, let's just click in here. Let's see what we want to do is from Apple TV. So, sometimes you'll be renting the movie for the price that's listed and sometimes you'll actually own the movie so that next year you can watch it as well. So we're going here and they do have a subscribe or we can log in with a remote. I actually don't have having a count there. So we can rent this for $3.99. We can also buy it for $9.99. So if you want to buy it, that's about to seem pricey, it would cost you if you were buying a DVD or a Blu-ray.
Searching for Christmas Movies
So let's go back out to the home screen. And so at the home screen, we can actually even search. So we can search for Christmas movies. And what we'll do here, we actually will just type in Christmas movies. And in fact, all I did was type in C. They know that Christmas is a lot of what people are searching for. So we're going to just click on Christmas movies. There are a lot of different Christmas movies out there.
Disney's Christmas Movie Collection
Now one of the things I will tell you that has changed the landscape of movies is that Fox did sell their movie catalog to Disney. So, they're movie catalog to Disney. So, the Home Alone, Home Alone 2, Home Alone 3. Santa Claus, Santa Claus 2, a lot of the Christmas movies out there are now owned by Disney.
Now, you can't subscribe to Disney and you can watch these movies. You can also just because they're owned by Disney doesn't mean they're not available on other platforms. You can still watch them like if we wanted to watch Home Alone, we can click here. And we see Home Alone, we can watch it on Disney, sign in or subscribe. We can watch it on Hulu, which is also owned by Disney. We can watch it on Prime, where we can actually purchase it or rent it. And so we see here various ways that we can actually watch this.
Amazon Prime Christmas Movies
Now, there's Rediscovered Television that does have a subscription, but you can watch a lot of things that way. Let's see if we went into Prime, Amazon Prime here, we can see what we need to do if we wanted to watch Home Alone. And so this is asking me because I am logged in, we do have a subscription, but this is not included in the subscription. So I can rent the movie for $3.99. I can buy the movie now, normally that would be $14.99, but they have a deal where I can buy it for $4.99.
Now what does that mean if we buy it? So if we buy it then we own it but it's available to us in the Amazon app. So we would be using it. You could view it online. You could view it on a Roku, on any device where you can install the Amazon Prime app.
You can also buy a bundle for $9.98. Now if we buy a bundle for $9.98, this gives us Home Alone and Home Alone 2 for $9.98. That's better than you can get, if you were to buy the DVD individually, it would cost you probably at least $9.99 for one DVD. So that's one way that you can watch this.
Popular Christmas Movie Options
Now let's go back out to to this search. And so if we wanted to search for a specific movie, now you see a Home Alone does come up in the list, but there's also A Christmas Story. There's Christmas with the Kranks and The Santa Clause. And so you see The Polar Express. There's various movies out here.
So if we wanted to look at how we can watch The Santa Clause again owned by Disney. So we can watch it with a Disney subscription. We can also subscribe to Hulu, which is again owned by Disney. And you have you can also get it from Amazon Prime and Apple Fandango. And so various ways that you can watch this.
Free Streaming Services for Christmas Movies
Now I will tell you also that there are a lot of movies available completely free on Tubi, on Pluto, and on the Roku channel.
Tubi: Free Christmas Movies with Ads
So if we go into Pluto, or excuse me, if we go into Tubi here, we can actually search for Christmas movies. Now some of the movies may be available on demand, which means you can watch them at any time you want to watch them. So here we have Tubi is loading up and Tubi is completely free so we can actually go up here and we want to go and search and so what we'll do is we'll actually search for Christmas movies and see how long how smart this is. So not quite as smart as Google is with YouTube. And okay, so we're going to just search for for Christmas movies.
As we start, we see a lot of content actually actually coming up on the right. So what we could do, let's say we wanted to do here's Tyler Perry's I'm a Madea Christmas. You see a lot of different movies coming up. Christmas in Compton. Christmas break in. And the first one is Christmas in the Rockies.
So a lot of different availability and, you know, again, this is completely free. And you can actually watch this on on Tubi. Christmas at the Holiday Inn, and we can just click play and this will actually actually just start playing.
Now there is commercials with free stuff. You're going to have commercials and you know what, it's okay. You're going to have commercials and you know what it's okay. You're going to have commercials. That's the way it is.
The Roku Channel: Free Streaming
Now we can also go over to the Roku channel and with the Roku channel there's free content as well and we can actually and we can actually search and here's the look of this, Miracle on 34th Street. So we can actually watch this and you can actually watch it for free on the Roku channel right now.
Again, when you're watching things for free, you're gonna see ads. That's the way it is. That's how they're paying for that. You're going to see the ads, but you're able to actually get in there, you're able to watch this and you'll be able to actually see.
Pluto TV: Free On-Demand and Live Channels
Now let's go back out to the home screen. If we go back out to the home screen, we can go to Pluto. And on Pluto, there are some content that is available on demand and there's also channels that play movies, and you can actually subscribe and with this, but it's completely free. You can log in if you want to. This is actually loading content that's from there, but we wanna actually just do a search.
So when we do a search. So when we do a search, you see Miracle on 34th Street again, coming up there. And so if we start searching for and start typing in Christmas, then we'll actually start getting more content that will show up actually some of some of it's getting getting a little bit less less specific. So here we have Christmas Break-In, you know, some various content that is coming up that we can actually watch of again completely free.
And some of this may come up on demand, and some of it may be something that you have to watch when it is on the air. So here's A Christmas Carol 1954 version.
YouTube: Free Holiday Content
And we also can go to YouTube itself. So on YouTube there are a lot of movies, a lot of home art movies available for free, a lot of Christian movies, and some of these will be Christmas movies as well. So we're going to go into YouTube, we'll just do a search here for Christmas movies.
Okay, so I see Christmas movies full movies down here. So we'll actually search for Christmas movies full movies down here. So I'll actually search for Christmas movies and so we have, now some of these will be actually where you actually have to pay for it and then you see YouTube premium movies you'll actually have to pay or subscribe or actually paste in some way but there's also searches and again a lot of free content subscribe or actually paste in some way. But there's also searches. And again, a lot of free content.
Some of these, here's A Christmas Carol, this Spirits of Christmas change, a miser's heart. And you can actually watch this. There's one movie that I watched in last year that is similar to that story based on that story and it's a more modern day, the Christmas movie. See Frosty's Winter Wonderland and a lot of these, The Waltons Christmas movie and some of these will be more current stuff. Some of them will be Christmas. He Miracles. Some of this will be older content and some of it will be Christmas Eve. Miracle, some of this will be older content and some of it will be actually content that maybe Hallmark, maybe Christian movies.
Here's the one that I've watched. It's not really Christmas, but it is a Christian movie. And so I think we're getting into getting away from the original search there. But you do have various content that you can watch completely free.
Finding Specific Christmas Movies: Christmas with the Kranks Example
And of course, if you have a particular movie, let's even just search for that. You know, we saw earlier saw Christmas with the Kranks. So let's go back out to the home screen of Roku. We can actually search for, we can actually search for various various things.
We're going back to the home screen and let's see, we want to search. Okay, so we have various various movies that do come up automatically. Let's see, we want to search. So we have various movies that do come up automatically, and that's based on what we have searched for in the past.
So we're going to actually start looking at this. There's Christmas, National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. That's a real funny one. And here's Christmas with the Kranks. Why don't to show you this again. This is owned by Disney now. So, but there's eight ways to watch. You can subscribe to HBO Max on the Roku channel or there's other ways that you can watch. You can watch it on a Prime Video again. This is going to be something that you're going to pay for or you either rented or you can actually own it.
Important: Protecting Your Digital Movie Library
And again, when you own these these videos, you're going to be going to access that through that service. So it's going to be important with any of these if you do purchase that you maintain your username, your password, you know how to get into that and you keep that secure so that you don't lose access to that because that's where these movies will be if you actually purchase them outright.
Summary: Your Options for Streaming Christmas Movies Without Cable
So that's how you can watch various Christmas movies without cable TV. Again, some of the movies you'll be able to watch completely free, some of them will require a subscription. You can get some of the movies actually through Paramount. You can get for free if you have a Walmart Plus subscription. Some of the content is free if you have a Prime Amazon Prime subscription. Then other content you may actually have to buy and you again have other free content that you can access on Tubi, on Pluto, on the Roku channel and on YouTube, and I'm sure there's other networks out there that have free movies as well, but great ways that you can take part in this that you can watch free movies without cable TV or low-cost movies without cable TV as well.
